There are many advantages to using a telematics system – from maximizing the utilization of your fleet to controlling and reducing maintenance costs to comply with government regulations. The latter is especially important in the US and Canada, where Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has been working on finalizing the Electronic Logging Devices regulation for quite some time. Current expectation is that the final rule will be finalized before the end of 2015 and the fleets will have two years to comply and completely switch from paper-based logs to electronic logs.
While exhibiting at CTIA 2015 in Las Vegas Gurtam announced and presented the fully compliant solution for HOS/ELD as an app module available in Wialon. The module was developed by our partner Assured Tracking Inc., the developer of at.Compass HOS solution. Present with us at the show was David Seijo, company’s owner, who was demo’ing the solution to many interested attendees who stopped by our booth.
The solution is based on the smartphone app (used by the driver) that connects to the Bluetooth enabled CAN bus reader or tracking device and receives the RPM and odometer values right from the vehicle on-board computer. The information is then combined with the driver’s manually entered status changes and transmitted to the back-end. The smartphone app always reflects the remaining on-duty and driving time, so that the driver can constantly monitor his compliance. In case of a roadside inspection, electronic logs can easily be generated right on the smartphone display and shown to the inspector.
Office employees, responsible for monitoring HOS compliance of the fleet, can then log into Wialon, access the HOS app module and check the current driving statuses for all drivers, as well as find out if anyone is out of compliance or close to being out of compliance, and react accordingly. Proactive monitoring of HOS compliance can greatly improve company’s CSA scores.
With the opportunity to login from various devices the HOS solution can maintain separate logbooks for team drivers. Alerts on violations can be sent via e-mail or SMS. Additionally, information can be summarized on a daily or weekly basis with detailed information on every status change.
